Texel Texels were first introduced into Australia in 1993 and the Notleks stud were listed in the First Flock book. They were marked as “the lean lamb” breed brought in specifically to reduce the fat content when used as terminal sire over other breeds.
- A meat sheep, which carries a fair amount of fleece
- First introduced into Australia 1993 – brought in from NZ – kept in quarantine and only sold off at first as “embryo transplants”
- Basically a terminal breed. Rams used
over other breeds to cut fat content and
provide leanness - 1st and 2nd cross
give exceptional eating lamb.
- Quick growing, heavily muscled and lean with a high dressing out carcase.
- Rams are highly fertile and can be used at an early age
- Produce very strong lambs from birth
- Ewes have good mothering skills - twins appear often
